Chapter 29 - The Yellow Door Beckons

December arrived with a fresh blanket of snow covering Central Park and the rooftops of Manhattan.

The Mercer-Brooks estate looked like something straight out of a holiday postcard. Smoke curled lazily from the stone chimney, warm amber lights glowed through every window, and right in the center of the front porch stood the bright yellow door, decorated with a wreath of fresh pine and winter berries.

Inside, Avery was hanging her very first handmade paper ornament on the towering Christmas tree, laughing as the family dog tried to chase the dangling ribbons.

Hannah stood by the kitchen island, rolling out cookie dough with Ethan standing right beside her, flour dusting his nose and his cashmere sweater.

"You know," Ethan teased, stealing a pinch of sugar dough from the tray, "for a former maid, you're turning out to be a terrible employee."

May you like

Hannah laughed, grabbing a handful of flour and lightly dusting it across his cheek. "I quit that job six months ago, Mr. Mercer. I'm the owner now."

Ethan smiled, catching her wrists and pulling her close against his chest, their breath mingling in the warm kitchen air.
