Chapter 11 - The Shadow in the Mirror

The autumn wind carried the scent of roasting chestnuts down Fifth Avenue, but inside the sprawling study of Elias Vance’s estate, the air felt cold. Elias stood before the wall of security monitors, his eyes fixed on Camera Four—the rear service entrance of the building.

A figure in a dark hoodie had lingered by the delivery bay for twenty minutes.

"Zoom in on the left hand," Elias ordered, his voice clipped and absolute.

Lev tapped the keyboard. The grainy digital image sharpened, revealing a scarred knuckle—a jagged crescent shape left behind from a shattered whiskey glass six months ago.

Mark.

Daniel Miller’s cousin had managed to slip through the cracks of the federal sweep. While Daniel rotted in a maximum-security federal facility upstate, Mark was still out there, nursing a burning vendetta and a bank account emptied by Elias's ruthless financial takeover.

"He's not alone," Lev muttered, pointing to a second thermal silhouette stepping out of the alley shadows. "He brought backup. Professional grade. Ex-mercenaries from the Belfast contracts."

Elias turned away from the monitors. His face was carved from granite. For six months, he had built a fortress of absolute safety for Ava and the twins, believing the ghosts of the past were firmly locked away. He had underestimated the cockroach resilience of desperate men.

"Lock down the residence," Elias commanded, pulling a custom-weighted Beretta from his holster and checking the magazine with a practiced click. "And keep Mrs. Miller in the master suite. If anyone breaches the perimeter, do not negotiate."
