Chapter 17 - The Confession

The cleanup of the estate took less than an hour. By sunrise, federal authorities had quietly collected Mark and his surviving associate, ensuring the incident never made the morning news cycle.

Down in the private conservatory, sunlight streamed through the massive glass ceiling, warming the stone floor.

Ava sat on a velvet sofa, a cup of untouched tea resting in her lap. Elias stood by the railing, staring out toward the park.

"You didn't have to risk your life tonight," Ava said softly, breaking the silence.

Elias turned to look at her. "Risk is just part of the ledger, Ava."

"Why?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly as she met his gaze. "Ten years ago, you built an empire on vengeance. You could have walked away from me and the girls. You could have given us money and sent us to Europe. Why keep us here? Why put yourself on the line?"

Elias walked slowly across the room until he was standing right in front of her. He knelt down on one knee, bringing himself eye-level with her.

"Because fifteen years ago, when my sister died because she had no one to protect her, I swore I would never let another innocent woman fall through the cracks," Elias said, his voice rough with emotion. "And the first night I found you under that overpass... holding those two little girls against the freezing cold... something in me woke up, Ava. You didn't just give me a reason to finish my war. You gave me a reason to stop fighting it."

Ava’s breath caught in her throat. She reached out, her hand resting gently against his rough, scarred cheek.

"You're not a monster, Elias," she whispered.

He leaned into her touch, closing his eyes for a brief moment as if absorbing warmth he hadn't felt in a lifetime.
