Chapter 14 - The Standoff

Mark stepped into the nursery, his weapon leading the way. The room smelled faintly of lavender baby powder and warm milk. In the center of the room, standing beside the double crib with her back straight and her chin held high, was Ava.
She didn't cower. She didn't scream.
She held Chloe in her left arm, while her right hand hovered protectively over Claire, who was beginning to stir and whimper at the noise.
"Well, well, well," Mark sneered, lowering the barrel of his gun slightly as he looked at her. "Daniel's little runaway bride. You look entirely too comfortable living in a billionaire's mansion while your husband rots in a cage."
"You're making a mistake, Mark," Ava said, her voice remarkably steady, though her heart was threatening to break through her chest. "Elias knows you're here. The building is locked down."
"Vance is currently bleeding out in the courtyard," Mark lied smoothly, taking a slow step forward. "Or at least, he will be in about ten seconds. Now, hand over the brats. Daniel wants what's his."

"They are not his," Ava whispered fiercely, stepping back until her spine hit the wall. "They never were."
Mark raised his pistol, aiming directly at Ava’s chest. "Then you can die with them."
