Chapter 13 - The Breach

The second-floor landing was silent as a tomb until the heavy mahogany door at the end of the corridor splintered inward under the force of a hydraulic breaching tool.

Mark stepped through the dust cloud, a suppressed automatic pistol raised in his right hand. His face was gaunt, his eyes hollow and bloodshot. Behind him stood two heavy-set men in tactical gear, their faces hidden behind dark balaclavas.

"Check the guest rooms," Mark hissed, his voice echoing in the dark corridor. "Vance thinks he owns the city, but he forgot about the back alleys."

They swept down the hallway, kicking open doors one by one. Empty guest rooms. A home office. A library lined with rare leather-bound books.

Mark stopped dead in front of the double doors at the end of the hall. A small brass plaque read NURSERY.

A cruel, twisted smile touched Mark’s lips. He raised the butt of his pistol and smashed it against the antique lock.

The door swung wide open.
