Chapter 2 - The Name on the Bracelet

Elias Vance did not believe in coincidence.
In the criminal underworld of New York, coincidence was just another word for a poorly planned assassination.
For ten years, Elias had built an empire that shadowed the city's legal financial grid. He owned the politicians, the docks, and the real estate developers who thought they ruled Manhattan. But tonight, Elias wasn't thinking about business. He was sitting in the back of his armored Maybach, staring out at the snow-choked streets, wrestling with a migraine that felt like a drill behind his eyes.
"Pull over by the pillars," Elias said quietly, his deep, gravelly voice cutting through the silence of the car.
His chief of security, a hulking ex-Mossad operative named Lev, frowned from the front seat. "Boss, it's minus ten out. The plow hasn't cleared this stretch. We should keep moving to the safehouse."
"I smell something," Elias said.
Lev didn't argue. He killed the engine, and the Maybach glided to a silent halt in the shadow of the massive concrete overpass. Elias stepped out into the biting wind, his long charcoal cashmere coat snapping around his ankles. He walked three paces toward the support pillar before his Italian leather shoe hit something soft.
He looked down.
A woman was curled into a tight, impossible ball against the freezing concrete. Her dress was ruined with dark, frozen crimson. But it wasn't the woman that made the feared mafia boss freeze in his tracks—it was the two small bundles clutched desperately against her chest.
"Lev," Elias whispered, a rare note of shock fracturing his iron composure. "Get over here. Now."
Lev rushed forward, dropping to his knees. He reached out, pressing two fingers against the woman's neck. "She's hypothermic, Boss. Pulse is barely there. But the kids... they're still moving."
Elias bent down. With movements surprisingly gentle for a man whose hands had broken empires, he peeled back the heavy coat. Two newborn infants stared up at him with wide, uncomprehending eyes, their tiny lips blue, crying silent, exhausted tears.
As Elias scooped one of the infants against his chest to share his body heat, his thumb brushed against the plastic identification band wrapped around the baby's tiny, freezing wrist.
He glanced down at the stamped hospital name and serial number.
Then, Elias Vance read the mother's full name embroidered on the collar of her ruined dress—a name he hadn't heard in fifteen years, belonging to the only woman who had ever broken his heart before he became a monster.

Elias's face went completely bloodless. He looked up at Lev, his eyes flashing with a terrifying, homicidal fury.
"Find out who owns this territory," Elias whispered, his voice dropping to a register that made Lev's blood run cold. "And bring me Daniel Miller by sunrise."
