Chapter 6 - The Awakening

Three miles away, inside the sterile, warm confines of Elias's private medical facility, Ava slowly opened her eyes.
The harsh white lights of the room took a moment to resolve into focus. She was lying on a plush mattress wrapped in heated thermal blankets. An IV drip hummed softly beside her arm, pumping saline and nutrients into her veins.
"Don't try to sit up just yet, Mrs. Miller."
Ava turned her head sharply. Sitting in a leather armchair beside the bed was a woman with kind eyes and silver-streaked hair—Dr. Sarah Bennett, the midwife who had been thrown out of her home hours earlier.
"Sarah?" Ava whispered, her voice like sandpaper. "Where... where are my babies? Did Daniel find them?"
Sarah smiled, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. She reached out and gently squeezed Ava's hand.
"Your babies are right here, Ava."
Sarah stepped aside, revealing a dual-unit incubator stationed right beside the bed. Inside, two tiny heads crowned with soft dark hair rose and fell in steady, peaceful unison. They were swaddled in soft pink blankets, warm and safe.
Ava choked back a sob, tears spilling over her lashes. "They're alive... Oh god, they're alive."
"They're stronger than you think," a deep voice said from the doorway.
Ava looked up. A tall, imposing man stood in the shadow of the doorframe. He wore a dark tailored suit, his sharp jawline and piercing eyes carrying an aura of absolute command. Yet, as he looked at the incubator, his expression softened into something almost tender.
"Who... who are you?" Ava asked, pulling the blanket tighter around her chest.
"My name is Elias," he said, stepping into the light. "And you are never going to have to be afraid again, Ava."

"Why are you helping me?"
Elias looked at her, a complicated emotion flickering across his face. "Because twenty years ago, my sister was abandoned by a man named Miller just like you were abandoned tonight. I couldn't save her then. But I can save you."
