Chapter 12 - A Knock on the Door

Upstairs, the nursery was bathed in the soft, amber glow of a nightlight. Ava hummed a gentle lullaby as she rocked six-month-old Claire, while Chloe slept soundly in her crib nearby. The tranquility of the room felt sacred, a stark contrast to the nightmares that still occasionally haunted her sleep.
A sharp, metallic thud echoed through the ventilation shafts.
Ava froze. Her heart hammered against her ribs. It wasn't the wind. It was the distinct sound of a heavy security latch being forced open on the ground floor.
She stood up instantly, setting Claire down in the crib beside her sister. Her hands trembled, but her survival instinct—honed during months of living under Daniel’s tyrannical roof—took over. She locked the heavy oak door of the nursery from the inside and pulled her phone from her pocket.
