Chapter 12 - THE COUNCILMAN'S TRAPThat evening, a high-profile charity gala was held at the Grand Imperial Hotel downtown. It was the epicenter of the city’s elite—politicians, CEOs, and high-ranking judges who smiled for the cameras while running corrupt syndicates behind closed doors.

When the heavy glass doors opened, all conversation ground to a sudden halt.

Daniel Hayes strode in, wearing a bespoke charcoal tuxedo that fit his imposing frame like armor. But it wasn't Daniel that made the crowd gasp—it was the woman on his arm. Maya wore a stunning, emerald-green silk gown that caught the chandelier light, her hair swept up in an elegant chignon. She moved with a quiet, breathtaking grace that completely commanded the room.

Across the ballroom, Councilman Thomas Vance—brother to the disgraced hospital administrator—dropped his champagne glass. It shattered against the marble floor, the sharp sound cutting through the ballroom music.

"Mr. Hayes," Councilman Vance stammered, forcing a tense, sweaty smile as he stepped forward to block their path. "I didn't realize you frequented charity events. And... and who is this lovely lady?"

Daniel stopped, his gaze dropping to Vance with freezing contempt. "Councilman. This is Maya Hayes. My wife."

The room erupted into quiet whispers. Victoria’s former allies exchanged terrified glances, realizing that the homeless girl they had tried to erase had just ascended to the throne of the underworld.

Vance’s face turned pale. "Your... wife? But I thought—"

"You thought wrong," Maya interrupted smoothly, stepping forward so the councilman had to look her dead in the eye. "Some things buried in the past have a habit of crawling back up. Especially when people try to lock them out in the cold."
