Chapter 14 - THE CONFESSIONBy 8:00 a.m. the next morning, every major television network in the country was broadcasting live from City Hall.

Councilman Thomas Vance stood behind the podium, looking ten years older, dark circles under his eyes, his hands gripping the edges of the wood so tightly his knuckles were white. Behind him stood two federal marshals and the Chief of Police.

"Effective immediately," Vance read from a trembling sheet of paper, his voice cracking over the live microphone, "I am resigning from my position on the municipal council. Furthermore... I am confessing to systematic abuse of power, falsification of municipal records, and illegal collaboration with Dr. Sterling’s human trafficking ring..."

Inside the master study of the Hayes Estate, Maya watched the broadcast on the large wall-mounted screen. Noah sat cross-legged on the rug, busy building an elaborate castle out of wooden blocks, while Aria slept peacefully in her crib nearby.

Daniel walked in, holding a steaming mug of tea, and handed it to Maya. He wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin softly on her shoulder.

"It's over," Daniel whispered against her hair. "The council is clean. The network is completely dismantled. No one will ever threaten you or our family again."

Maya leaned back into his warm embrace, letting out a long, shuddering breath she felt like she had been holding for twenty-four years. "It feels strange... knowing that the people who stole my childhood are finally facing justice."

"You don't have to look over your shoulder anymore," Daniel promised, turning her around so she was facing him. He looked deep into her eyes, full of a fierce, unyielding devotion. "You are safe here. With me. With our children."

Noah looked up from his blocks, flashing a wide, bright smile. "Are we going to the park today, Dad? Maya promised she'd push me on the swing!"

Daniel chuckled, a sound so warm and free it felt like a miracle in this house. "Anything you want, champ. Anything at all."
