Chapter 18 - CHECKMATEPanic rippled through Victoria’s remaining mercenaries. Seeing their tactical advantage vanish in a single second, they dropped their weapons and raised their hands in surrender.

"Cowards! Shoot her!" Victoria screamed, shaking the detonator frantically. "Shoot her right now!"

"Your mercenaries are smart, Victoria. You aren't," Daniel said coldly. With lightning-fast reflexes, he raised his pistol and fired a single, perfectly aimed shot that struck the detonator directly in Victoria’s hand.

Spark!

The plastic casing shattered instantly, sending electrical sparks flying against her palm and knocking the device out of her grip into a puddle of water, completely short-circuiting the charge.

Victoria stared at her smoking hand in absolute disbelief, letting out a shriek of pure rage. She lunged forward like a feral animal, clawing at Daniel's chest, but Marcus was already there, grabbing her arms behind her back and slamming her wrists into heavy steel cuffs with brutal efficiency.

"Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?!" Victoria shrieked as Marcus dragged her toward an unmarked black van waiting at the gate.

"Yeah," Marcus muttered coldly, shoving her into the back seat. "A loser."

Daniel watched her vehicle tear down the driveway under armed guard, disappearing into the rainy night. The storm overhead finally began to break, parting the clouds to let a single, brilliant ray of moonlight shine down upon the courtyard.

Daniel turned around and walked back toward the house, looking up at the balcony where Maya still stood, holding the rifle with an aura of absolute majesty.
