Chapter 6 - THE ASHES OF THE EMPIREThe private penthouse atop the Hayes Tower overlooked the sprawling, rain-drenched skyline of the city. Down below, sirens painted the night in flashing blues and reds, but inside, the atmosphere was thick with a heavy, suffocating silence.

Noah was finally sleeping soundly on the velvet sofa, his small hand still tightly clutching the edge of Maya’s jacket. In the adjacent nursery, little Aria rested peacefully in a crib made of polished mahogany, watched over by two armed guards stationed quietly outside the door.
Maya sat at the edge of the grand mahogany dining table, staring into a steaming cup of black coffee Daniel had personally brewed for her. Her torn clothes had been replaced by a simple, elegant silk blouse and trousers provided by the household staff, but she still looked like a ghost trespassing in a palace.
Daniel walked in, setting a heavy leather-bound ledger on the table between them.
"The commission voted unanimously an hour ago," Daniel said quietly, taking a seat across from her. "Victoria’s faction has been dismantled. Her assets seized. She won't be bothering anyone ever again."
"Good," Maya murmured, blowing softly on the coffee. She didn't sound relieved; she sounded exhausted. "So now what? You have your kids back. You have your empire secure. What do you need with me?"
Daniel leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. In the warm glow of the chandelier, the harsh, terrifying aura of the feared mafia boss softened into something profoundly vulnerable.
"When Elena died, I thought the world ended," Daniel spoke, his voice low and steady. "I thought my heart was buried with her in that cemetery. For two years, I lived in a ghost town of my own making."
Maya looked up, meeting his intense gaze. "You loved her."
"More than my own life," Daniel answered without hesitation. "And when I saw you on that curb today... sharing your last bit of water with a boy who hadn't spoken in two years... I saw something I hadn't seen since the day she died."
"What's that?"
"Hope," Daniel whispered. He reached across the table, his warm fingers brushing gently against her bruised knuckles. "And when the hospital broadcast revealed the truth about Aria... and about your connection to Dr. Sterling’s underground trafficking ring... everything clicked."

Maya’s breath hitched. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying Dr. Sterling didn't just steal my daughter," Daniel said, his eyes hardening with a dangerous, protective fire. "He destroyed your family too, twenty-four years ago. We share the same enemy, Maya. And I don't intend to let them breathe another free breath."
