Chapter 7 - THE GHOST OF DR. STERLINGDawn broke over the city, washing the skyscrapers in a pale, amber light. In a heavily fortified medical research facility on the outskirts of town, Dr. Sterling paced frantically across his private office, smashing a ceramic mug against the wall.
"What do you mean the police are raiding the annex?!" Sterling roared into his secure satellite phone. "That facility was airtight!"
"It was, until Hayes found the girl," a panicked voice replied on the other end. "He has the twins, Doctor. And worse... he found the adoption archives. If he digs any deeper into the 1998 files, he’ll find out how you funded this entire syndicate using stolen infants as collateral."
Sterling’s face turned white as paper. He slammed the phone down, his hands shaking as he unlocked his desk drawer and pulled out a heavy metal passport case and a loaded revolver. He needed to get out of the country, and he needed to do it now.
As he turned toward the private exit leading to the helipad, the heavy oak doors of his office suddenly exploded inward with a deafening crash.
Splintered wood and smoke filled the room. Through the haze walked Daniel Hayes, flanked by Marcus and Leo, their weapons drawn and ready. But standing directly beside Daniel was Maya.
Sterling froze, his eyes widening in sheer terror as he stared at Maya’s face. For a terrifying split second, he thought he was looking at a ghost.
"Elena... no, you're dead," Sterling stammered, stumbling backward until his knees hit the edge of his desk. "I saw the monitors flatline!"
Maya stepped forward into the light, her expression cold, composed, and absolutely lethal.

"You didn't kill my mother, Doctor," Maya said, her voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel. "You just stole her children and left her to bleed out while you built an empire on human misery."
Sterling’s hand frantically reached into his coat pocket for the revolver, but before his fingers could wrap around the grip, a gunshot echoed through the room.
