Chapter 15 - SHADOWS OF THE PASTTwo weeks later, the Hayes Estate was bathed in the warm, golden light of a peaceful Saturday afternoon. The gardens were bursting with blooming hydrangeas, and the sound of children's laughter echoed across the manicured lawn.

Maya sat on a white wooden bench beneath the shade of an old oak tree, watching Noah chase a golden retriever across the grass. Aria was resting in her stroller, gurgling happily as she batted at a dangling toy.
For the first time in her life, Maya felt a deep, profound sense of belonging. The hungry, desperate girl sitting on the curb of Broad Street felt like someone else entirely—a fictional character in a story she had somehow survived.
Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path. Maya looked up to see Daniel walking toward her, carrying a small, weathered leather box tied with a faded red ribbon.
"What's that?" Maya asked, tilting her head curiously.
Daniel sat down beside her on the bench, gently placing the box in her lap. "When the federal agents cleared out Dr. Sterling’s private vault last night, they found a secondary lockbox labeled with your mother’s maiden name. They brought it straight to me."
Maya’s breath caught in her throat. Her fingers trembled as she untied the faded ribbon and lifted the heavy brass latch.
Inside sat a collection of old photographs, a silver locket with two tiny portraits inside, and a handwritten letter yellowed with age. She pulled out the letter, her eyes stinging with hot tears as she recognized her mother's elegant, sweeping handwriting.

My dearest daughters, the letter began. If you are reading this, it means I was never able to bring you home. But know this—even in the darkest nights, my love for you both burned brighter than the stars. Find each other. Protect each other. Love will always find a way back home.
Maya pressed the letter against her chest, silent tears spilling over her lashes. Daniel reached out, pulling her gently into his arms, letting her cry away the last remnants of her pain against his shoulder.
