Chapter 4 - The Bloodstained Ledger

Hook: The documents inside the blue envelope prove that the car crash wasn't a tragedy—it was a planned execution.

"That's a lie," Marissa choked out, tears finally spilling over her lashes. She dumped the contents of the blue envelope onto the laminate table. "Thomas wasn't a thief. He found out your brother was cooking the books to fund a hostile takeover of our own company. Thomas was going to bring the audit to you, Mr. Whitmore, the very next morning."

Adrian stepped forward, his hands trembling as he picked up the top document. It was a signed affidavit from Thomas Keane, dated twenty-four hours before the fatal crash, detailing millions of dollars siphoned into off-shore accounts controlled by none other than Arthur Vance and Julian Whitmore.

Pinned to the back of the affidavit was a printout of a text message sent from Julian’s phone to Thomas on the night of the accident: 'Meet me at the old coastal warehouse. Bring the hard drive, or your wife raises your child alone.'

The horror washed over Adrian in suffocating waves. His brother—the golden boy of the Whitmore dynasty—wasn't a victim. He was a criminal. And Arthur Vance had spent the last four years covering up the murder, keeping Thomas's widow impoverished and desperate so she would never look too closely at the settlement papers she had signed in a state of grief-stricken shock.

"You knew," Adrian whispered, looking up at the aging lawyer with eyes burning with cold fury. "You knew Julian killed him, and you helped cover it up."
