Chapter 3 - The Mask Slips

Hook: When the billionaire confronts his most trusted employee, the lawyer’s reaction reveals a betrayal that goes all the way to the top.

Arthur Vance spun around, his face draining of all color. For a man who had stared down hostile corporate raiders and navigated high-stakes federal investigations without blinking, the sight of Adrian Whitmore standing in a run-down South Boston tenement was apocalyptic.

"A-Adrian," Vance stammered, his professional composure shattering instantly. "What... what are you doing here? This is a private matter concerning corporate compliance—"

"Corporate compliance?" Adrian cut him off, stepping past the lawyer and locking eyes with a terrified Marissa. "Is that what we're calling extortion now, Arthur? You’ve been shaking down my own housekeeper for four years using company funds and confidential legal threats?"

Marissa backed away, clutching the blue envelope to her chest as if it were a shield. "Mr. Whitmore, please... you don't understand. If you interfere, they'll take everything. They'll take my baby!"

"Nobody is taking anything," Adrian said, his voice dropping into the cold, commanding tone he usually reserved boardrooms. He turned back to Vance. "Explain yourself. Right now. Why is our family attorney collecting hush money from the widow of a man whose name was scrubbed from our records the night my brother died?"

Vance swallowed hard, wiping sweat from his forehead with a silk handkerchief. He looked at Marissa, then back to Adrian, realizing the trap had sprung shut. A bitter, desperate smile touched the old lawyer's lips.

"You think your brother died in a car accident, Adrian?" Vance laughed dryly. "You poor, naive fool. Julian didn't drive off that bridge by accident. And Thomas Keane wasn't just a low-level accountant. They were partners in a massive embezzlement scheme that would have bankrupted Whitmore Infrastructure overnight. Thomas tried to back out, and Julian... well, Julian made sure he couldn't talk."

The room fell dead silent, save for the faint wail of the hungry baby. Adrian stared at Vance, his world tilting entirely off its axis.
