Chapter 5 - Ambushed in the Dark

Hook: Trapped in the tenement with a corrupted lawyer and armed mercenaries, Adrian must make a split-second choice to save Marissa and her baby.

Heavy, booted footsteps pounded up the wooden stairs outside the apartment door. Before Adrian could reach the entryway, the door was kicked off its hinges with a splintering crash. Two burly men in tactical gear stepped into the room, their faces hidden behind dark balaclavas, each holding a suppressed firearm.

"End of the line, Adrian," Vance said, stepping back behind the two mercenaries. "It’s a tragedy that you followed your employee into a dangerous neighborhood. A botched robbery. The police report practically writes itself."

Marissa screamed, throwing her body over her mother and the infant in the corner of the room.

Adrian didn’t hesitate. Years of high-end martial arts training—hobbies kept strictly for discipline—kicked in. As the first mercenary lunged forward to grab him, Adrian slammed a heavy iron skillet from the counter directly into the man’s temple. The operative crumpled instantly, his weapon clattering across the floor.

The second mercenary raised his firearm, aiming squarely at Adrian’s chest.

"Drop it!" Vance barked.

Adrian kicked the sliding kitchen table hard, sending it crashing into the second operative's shins just as he pulled the trigger. The bullet zipped past Adrian’s ear, shattering the kitchen window and letting the cold rain pour into the room. With a savage roar, Adrian closed the distance, driving his fist into the man's jaw and sending him crashing through the rotting drywall.

Silence fell over the apartment once more, broken only by the whistling wind and the crying baby.

Adrian stood panting, his knuckles bruised and bleeding. He looked at Vance, who was now backing toward the shattered doorway, sheer panic written across his face.

"You're finished, Arthur," Adrian panted, stepping forward. "The police are already getting an automated alert from my car's GPS."

Vance smiled weakly, pulling out his phone. "Maybe. But look at your phone first, Adrian. Check your corporate email."
