Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Family Tree

Hook: What secret could be so explosive that a multi-million-dollar corporation was still paying hush money to a dead man's widow?
Adrian’s mind raced back four years, landing hard on the darkest chapter of the Whitmore family history. It was the winter his older brother, Julian, had allegedly died in a fiery, single-car crash off the Cape Cod highway. The official report was clean, almost too clean: black ice, excessive speed, a tragic end to a brilliant corporate heir. But Adrian had always suspected something was missing. The board had acted with bizarre, unseemly haste, sealing the police reports and quietly buying out Julian’s remaining shares within forty-eight hours.
And Marissa’s husband—Thomas Keane—had vanished from the company payroll on that exact same day.
Inside the apartment, Arthur Vance reached out gloved fingers and tapped the blue envelope. "Open it, Marissa. Let’s verify the contents. If the missing ledger pages aren't inside, the terms of the non-disclosure agreement are nullified, and we proceed with immediate foreclosure on your mother's home."
"No!" Marissa’s mother gasped, clutching the baby closer to her chest. "Please, Mr. Vance. My daughter gave up everything for this family. She gave up her husband’s memory so your precious company wouldn't burn to the ground!"
Adrian felt the floor drop out from beneath him. Her husband gave his life, and Marissa gave her silence—all to protect the Whitmore name.

Slowly, deliberately, Marissa slid the flap of the blue envelope open. She reached inside and pulled out a stack of faded, water-stained photographs and a microcassette recorder. But before Vance could snatch them, Adrian stepped out of the shadows, his voice slicing through the tense air like a razor.
"Don't touch them, Arthur."
