Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm

The silence in the dining room stretched thin, heavy enough to slice with a butter knife. Robert, Michael’s father, adjusted his napkin, completely oblivious to the silent war being fought across the porcelain plates.
“I’m just saying, son,” Robert repeated, his tone dripping with the casual authority of a man who rarely questioned his own opinions. “A stressed bride is a dangerous bride. If the help is becoming a liability, cut her loose. You’ve got too much riding on this merger—er, wedding.”
Michael didn’t blink. His gaze remained locked on Olivia, who delicately dabbed her lips with a cloth napkin. Her eyes flicked toward him, a masterclass in feigned innocence, before returning to her plate.
“Sophie stays, Dad,” Michael said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.
Olivia’s hand froze mid-motion. Robert frowned, dropping his fork with a sharp clatter. “Don’t be ridiculous, Michael. Olivia is running herself ragged trying to manage this household and plan a three-hundred-guest ceremony. The least you can do is support her household decisions.”
“Her household decisions,” Michael echoed, the words tasting like ash.
“Yes, mine,” Olivia chimed in, stepping smoothly into the conversation with a gentle, wounded sigh. She pitched her voice to sound fragile, the ultimate martyr of domestic stress. “It’s fine, Robert. Really. I know Michael is just stressed about the firm. It’s just... when someone makes repeated errors with guest lists and leaves wine stains on antique rugs, it adds up. But I’ll manage. I always do.”
Wine stains on antique rugs.
Michael’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. There had been no wine on the rug. The wine had been deliberately spilled on a freshly mopped tile floor by Olivia’s own manicured hands. She wasn't just gaslighting Sophie; she was actively spinning a web of lies to family members who would automatically side with her class-conscious sensibilities.

“You won’t have to manage it much longer, Olivia,” Michael said slowly, standing up from the table without touching his coffee. “Because things are going to change around here very soon.”
He walked out of the room, leaving Olivia staring at his retreating back with a sudden, sharp flicker of unease. She couldn’t read him anymore, and that terrified her.
