Chapter 11 - The Echoes of Defeat

The penthouse overlooking Piedmont Park felt more like a tomb than a high-society sanctuary. Shattered crystal glass glittered across the imported Italian marble floor where Olivia had hurled a bottle of scotch against the wall just an hour earlier.

Robert sat heavily on the leather sofa, his head in his hands, looking every bit of his seventy years. The corporate failure had hit him harder than any market crash. Vance Capital had officially severed ties, pulling their liquidity lines after realizing Michael held the unbreakable patent trust, and the board of directors had ousted Robert as managing partner to save face.

“Your little revenge scheme completely imploded, Olivia,” Robert muttered, his voice hollow and broken. “We’re locked out of the trust, our credit lines are frozen, and the social columns are having a field day with our silence.”

Olivia stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, her fingernails digging deep into her palms until the skin turned white. Her face was twisted into a mask of pure, venomous fury. She refused to accept defeat. A Sterling didn’t lose to a cleaning lady’s son.

“We aren’t finished, Dad,” Olivia hissed, turning around with a chilling smile that didn’t reach her dead eyes. “Michael thinks he’s won because he protected his patents and kept his little maid. But he made one critical mistake.”

Robert looked up, exhausted. “What mistake could he possibly have made?”

“He let his guard down,” Olivia whispered, stepping toward the door. “He thinks the war is fought in boardrooms and trust documents. He forgot that personal destruction is an art form. And I am a master artist.”
