Chapter 6 - The Return

By noon, the estate felt lighter, as if a toxic fog had finally been cleared from its halls.

Michael walked into the expansive country-style kitchen, expecting to find it empty. Instead, Sophie was standing by the counter, quietly packing a small canvas duffel bag.

He stopped in the doorway, a sudden knot tightening in his stomach. “Sophie. What are you doing?”

Sophie looked up, startled. She carefully zipped her bag and turned to face him, her expression a mix of resignation and quiet dignity.

“I’m leaving, Mr. Michael,” she said quietly.

“Leaving? Why? Olivia is gone. You don’t have to work under her tyranny anymore.”

“I know,” Sophie replied, offering a sad, gentle smile. “And I’m grateful for everything you did. Really. But... the damage is done. The estate manager has been whispering, the other staff don’t know what to think, and frankly... staying here after everything that’s happened would be impossible for me. I have my nursing classes, and I can find work elsewhere.”

Michael stepped into the kitchen, closing the distance between them. “You didn't do anything wrong, Sophie. You shouldn't have to leave your job because of her toxicity.”

“It’s not about blame, Mr. Michael,” she said, looking him straight in the eye with a quiet strength that took his breath away. “It’s about self-respect. My mother taught me something very similar to what your mother taught you: never stay where your presence is tolerated out of pity, but where your work is respected.”

Michael stared at her, utterly humbled. In that moment, he saw the incredible depth of character standing before him—a young woman supporting her sick mother and twelve-year-old brother, studying late into the night for a nursing certification, enduring humiliation with silent grace simply because she needed to survive.

“What if I’m not asking you to stay as a maid?” Michael asked before he could stop himself.

Sophie blinked, tilting her head in confusion. “What do you mean?”

“I mean... stay as something else,” Michael said, his heart pounding against his ribs in a way it hadn't in years. “Stay as my partner in managing this estate. Stay as someone I can talk to, share meals with, and actually get to know properly.”

Sophie stepped back, her eyes widening in shock. “Mr. Michael... you just broke off a high-society engagement this morning. You’re emotional, you’re stressed, and—”

“I have never been more clear-headed in my life,” Michael interrupted, taking her hand. Her skin was warm, calloused from hard work, completely real. “I don’t want a society marriage built on status and lies. I want something genuine. Give me a chance to prove it to you.”

Sophie looked down at his hand holding hers, a complex emotion flickering across her expressive brown eyes. Slowly, a genuine, radiant smile broke through her cautious exterior.

“Well,” she whispered softly, “I suppose my nursing classes don’t start until Tuesday. I could stay... for dinner.”
