Chapter 13 - The Shadow Over the Clinic

The atmosphere in the house shifted from sanctuary to fortress in a matter of seconds. Michael’s phone rang before he could even process the threat—it was his estate security director.
“Mr. Sterling, we’ve picked up an anomaly on the perimeter cameras,” the security chief’s voice crackled through the speaker, urgent and sharp. “A black sedan has been casing the estate perimeter for the last forty-eight hours. We ran the plates. They trace back to a shell corporation registered under Vance Capital holdings.”
Michael’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently. “They’re targeting Ethan.”
“It looks like psychological warfare, sir,” the chief warned. “They aren’t breaking in; they’re showing you they can touch you where it hurts most.”
Sophie was shaking, her nursing books forgotten on the counter. “My brother... Michael, we have to pull him out of school. We have to hide him.”
“No one is hiding,” Michael said, his voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute steel that terrified even himself. He pulled Sophie into a reassuring embrace, kissing the top of her head. “Listen to me, Sophie. You are going to your clinic shift. Ethan is going to stay under heavy private guard at his school until I pick him up personally. And Olivia is going to learn that playing with family is a fatal error.”

By the time Michael dropped Sophie off at the downtown medical center—where a discreet plainclothes security detail immediately melted into the lobby shadows—his mind was operating with terrifying clarity. Olivia wanted a war of attrition? He would give her an unconditional surrender.
He didn’t head back to the estate. He drove straight to a nondescript office building downtown, home to the finest digital forensic and cyber-investigation firm in the Southeast.
