Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Checkmate

Six months after the infamous Slack message shook Prescott Global, a grand charity gala was held at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts—the premier social event of the season where Boston’s elite gathered to display their wealth, status, and influence.
The ballroom was packed with glittering chandeliers, expensive champagne, and impeccably dressed executives. Whispers immediately swept through the crowd when the massive double doors opened.
All eyes turned toward the entrance.
There stood Claire Prescott.
She wasn't wearing a subdued, elegant dress meant to blend into the background as an executive's quiet wife. She wore a stunning, custom-tailored emerald gown that caught every flicker of light, walking with an aura of absolute grace and unshakeable power. On her arm was not a cheating husband, but the senior managing director of Sterling Capital, attending purely as her escort and colleague.
Across the room, standing near the catering tables in a cheap, off-the-rack suit that didn't quite fit him, was Aaron. He had managed to secure a low-level consulting gig through a distant acquaintance, but he was a ghost in the world he once ruled.
When Claire’s eyes swept across the room, she caught sight of him. Aaron shrank back against the marble pillar, his face turning pale with humiliation as he looked away, unable to meet her gaze.

Claire didn't pause. She didn't glare, and she didn't gloat. She simply gave a polite, indifferent nod—the kind of look one might give a stranger whose name you couldn't quite remember.
She walked past him, heading toward the center of the grand ballroom where the future awaited her. Aaron watched her go, finally realizing the bitter, irreversible truth: the woman he had underestimated for three long years hadn't just beaten him—she had built the very world he was now begging to survive in.
