Chapter 15 - The Final Plea

Midnight at the Marblehead waterfront estate was pitch black, save for the rhythmic sweep of a distant lighthouse beam cutting across the dark ocean.

Claire sat by the fireplace, reading a leather-bound book, when a sharp, frantic hammering echoed against the heavy oak front door.

She didn't rush. She closed her book, placed a silver bookmark between the pages, and walked slowly through the hallway.

When she unlocked and pulled the door open, Aaron stood on the porch.

He looked unrecognisable. His expensive designer coat was soaked through with rain, his hair matted against his forehead, and his eyes were bloodshot, wide with sheer desperation.

"Claire," he choked out, his voice cracking violently as he tried to step inside. "Please. You have to listen to me. Just five minutes."

Claire did not move an inch. She blocked the doorway entirely, her expression an impenetrable wall of ice.

"You're trespassing, Aaron," she said quietly.

"My mother had a stroke tonight," Aaron sobbed, his hands gripping the doorframe desperately. "The estate is gone. The bank seized the house in Chestnut Hill. We have nothing left. Everything we built—everything I built—is gone."

"You built nothing, Aaron," Claire replied, her voice steady and piercing. "You inherited a name, you stole from a company, and you treated human beings like disposable objects. And now you're paying the price."

"Please," Aaron begged, falling to his knees on the wet porch wood, tears mixing with the rain on his face. "Take me back. I was a fool. I'll do anything. I'll be whatever you want me to be. Just don't let them destroy us."

Claire looked down at the man who had spent three years making her feel invisible, small, and worthless.

"When I typed that Slack message, Aaron, I wasn't asking for a fight," Claire said softly. "I was turning off the lights in a hotel you never deserved to live in."

She closed the heavy oak door in his face.

The double-deadbolt clicked into place with a definitive, echoing snap.
