Chapter 2 - The Mother-in-Law’s Wrath

Across town, in an exclusive gated community in Chestnut Hill, Margaret Prescott was having her morning silver-service tea when her phone began vibrating incessantly. After the sixth call from a country club acquaintance asking if the rumors about Aaron and Jasmine were true, Margaret’s blood pressure spiked to dangerous levels.

She dialed her son immediately. When Aaron finally picked up on the fourth ring, his voice was tight.

"Mother, I’m dealing with a crisis—"

"A crisis?" Margaret screamed into the receiver, her voice sharp enough to shatter crystal. "You absolute fool! You let that quiet, unremarkable girl completely dismantle our family's legacy before noon! Do you have any idea what the board is saying? Eleanor Sterling just called me to ask if your wife was institutionalized!"

"Claire did this out of malice," Aaron snapped back, refusing to take accountability. "She’s vindictive. She couldn't handle my success."

"She handled your clothes, your home, and your public image for three years while you behaved like an alley cat!" Margaret retorted. "And now you’ve handed her every legal weapon she needs in a silver platter. Get over to Nathan Brooks’ office immediately and find out what she’s filing. If she touches a single cent of the Prescott trust, I will disown you myself."

Aaron slammed his phone down on the glass coffee table, shattering the screen. He turned to Jasmine, who was hastily gathering her designer handbag.

"Where are you going?" Aaron demanded.

"My apartment," Jasmine said, her voice dripping with sudden resentment. "If the board is investigating you, I am not going down with your sinking ship, Aaron. Fix your life first."
