Chapter 19 - The Stranger on the Street

Late that evening, after the gala had concluded and the guests had dispersed into the cool Boston night, Claire walked out of the side entrance of the Seaport Hotel toward her waiting town car.
The rain had stopped, leaving the pavement slick and reflecting the neon lights of the city.
As she stepped toward the car door, a ragged figure stepped out from the shadow of a concrete pillar.
It was Aaron.
He looked ten years older. His hair was streaked with gray, his cheeks hollow, wearing a faded, oversized jacket that offered little protection against the autumn chill. He took a hesitant step forward, raising a trembling hand.
"Claire..." he whispered, his voice broken, barely audible over the hum of traffic.
Claire stopped. She turned slowly, looking at the man standing a few feet away. For a brief second, the memories of the luxury hotel home, the pressing of suits, and the quiet, lonely nights flashed through her mind.
Then, she felt nothing at all. Just complete, absolute peace.
Aaron stared at her, tears welling in his tired, bloodshot eyes. "I... I'm sorry, Claire. I lost everything."
Claire looked at him—not with anger, not with hatred, but with the quiet, profound indifference one reserves for a stranger whose name has slipped from memory.
"I know, Aaron," Claire said softly.

She opened the car door, stepped inside, and closed it gently behind her.
Through the tinted glass, she watched him standing alone on the wet pavement, a ghost of a past life she had long since left behind.
