Chapter 12 - The Confession RoomTwo days later, inside the sterile, fluorescent-lit visitation booth of the county detention center, Victoria Sterling sat behind thick, reinforced security glass. Her hair was unwashed, her designer clothes replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit. The arrogance that once defined her posture had completely fractured into a hollow, jagged shell.

She picked up the heavy plastic telephone receiver with shaking hands. Arthur sat on the other side, his expression completely unreadable.
"You... you came," Victoria whispered, her voice cracking through the static-filled speaker.
"I found the final file from your father's vault, Victoria," Arthur said calmly, his voice steady. "The adoption intake form from twelve years ago."
Victoria’s breath hitched. Her face drained of what little color remained, and she gripped the edges of the metal table.
"You know..." she choked out, a single tear cutting a clean path through the grime on her cheek. "Dad said giving her up was the only way to save the company line. He said children were just currency. But when you brought those kids home... every time I looked at Maya, I saw my own secret staring back at me. It drove me insane."
"So you took your hatred out on a little girl who didn't even know why you despised her," Arthur replied, his tone devoid of pity, carrying only absolute, cutting clarity. "You weren't protecting an empire, Victoria. You were running from your own cowardice."
"Are you going to tell her?" Victoria begged, her composure finally shattering as she pressed her palm against the glass. "Please... Arthur... don't tell Maya."

Arthur stood up slowly, hanging the receiver back on its cradle. He looked down at her one last time before turning his back on the woman he once called his wife.
"She already has a family," Arthur said over his shoulder. "And you were never part of it."
