Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the SystemThe air in the home office grew instantly cold. Arthur stared at the deed transfer agreement, his eyes scanning the fine print. Victoria hadn't just forged his signature; she had executed a fraudulent power of attorney while he was recovering from emergency appendectomy surgery two years ago, quietly transferring the title of his family home into her sole name.

She owns the house, the horrifying realization hit him like a physical blow. Technically, I am the trespasser.
His hands shook as he reached deeper into the metal lockbox and pulled out the USB flash drive labeled PROJECT_JANUS. Without thinking twice, he plugged the drive into his secure offline terminal.
The screen blinked, flashing a command prompt interface before automatically launching an encrypted video file.
The video opened with shaky, high-definition footage recorded inside a dimly lit hotel room. A date stamp in the corner read: October 14, three years ago—just two months before he and Victoria met.
On screen sat a man Arthur recognized instantly: Julian Vance, the ruthless chief financial officer of Sterling Enterprises. Across from him sat a woman sobbing hysterically—a woman who looked strikingly, hauntingly familiar to someone Arthur had buried long ago.
Arthur gasped, gripping the edges of the desk so tightly his knuckles turned white.
The woman on the screen was Clara. Clara Vance. Julian's estranged sister, and... the biological mother of Maya and Leo.
Clara’s voice trembled through the computer speakers, thick with terror. "Julian, please! If Richard finds out I kept the financial records proving the embezzlement, he’ll kill me! You know what he does to whistleblowers!"
Julian leaned forward, his face a mask of cold corporate indifference. "You shouldn't have snooped into the Sterling offshore accounts, Clara. Dad already knows. And he doesn't leave loose ends."
"What about my children?" Clara cried out, clutching a baby blanket. "Maya and Leo—they're innocent!"
"Don't worry," a chilling, gravelly voice echoed from off-camera. A heavy-set, older man stepped into the frame, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. It was Richard Sterling himself. "They'll be taken care of. Just like you will be."

The video cut abruptly to black.
Arthur sat paralyzed. The children he had taken in weren't just random orphans; they were the surviving witnesses of a corporate massacre covered up by the very family Victoria belonged to. And Victoria hadn't just married him by chance—she had been sent to watch them.
