Chapter 16 - The Hidden LegacyThe morning mail carrier dropped a single, heavy, cream-colored envelope into the metal mailbox at the end of the driveway. It wasn't a court notice, nor was it a utility bill. It bore an old, weathered postmark from a small coastal town in Maine and was addressed in an elegant, unfamiliar handwriting to Arthur Vance and Guardian of Maya & Leo.

Curious, Arthur carried the envelope inside and slit open the seal at the kitchen table while the children were finishing their breakfast cereal.

Inside lay a handwritten letter on thick parchment paper, along with a certified bank cashier's check made out in Arthur's name for a sum that made his eyes widen: $2.5 million.

The letter, dated nearly three years ago just before Clara’s tragic disappearance, read:

"Dear Arthur, if you are reading this, it means the worst has happened, and my brother Julian and my father Richard finally closed in on me. I know you were always the steady anchor in our old college circle, the one person I could trust. I managed to squirrel away an independent trust fund away from the Sterling accounts—money left to me by our mother. I am leaving it entirely for Maya and Leo's future. Keep them safe from the wolves.

With all my gratitude, Clara Vance."

Arthur stared at the check, his chest tightening with emotion. Clara hadn't just left her children in his care; she had left them the key to their complete and total independence, hidden away where even Richard Sterling's greedy hands could never reach it.
