Chapter 13 - Whispers in the DarkBack at home, the evening breeze rustled the oak trees outside the bedroom window. The house finally felt like a sanctuary again, stripped of the cold, sterile luxury that Victoria had forced upon it.

Arthur sat quietly on the edge of Maya’s bed. The twelve-year-old was propped up against her pillows, sketching a picture of a golden retriever in her new notebook. Leo was already fast asleep on the floor mattress next to her, clutching his favorite stuffed animal.

"Uncle Arthur?" Maya asked softly, looking up from her drawing. "Is that bad woman ever coming back?"

Arthur smiled gently, brushing a stray lock of dark hair from her forehead. "No, sweetie. She's never coming back. You're completely safe here. No one will ever hurt you or your brother again."

Maya nodded, a small, peaceful smile touching her lips. "I'm glad. This house feels warm now. Like a real home."

Arthur kissed the top of her head, turning off the bedside lamp. As he walked out and gently pulled the bedroom door closed, he carried the secret of Maya's true parentage locked deep inside his own heart. Some truths were meant to protect children, not burden them.

He walked down the hallway to his study, sat at his desk, and looked at a clean, blank sheet of paper. The legal battles were winding down, the federal investigations were wrapping up, and his future—and the children's—was finally entirely in his own hands.
