Chapter 22 - The Extended CircleArthur studied Thomas closely, reading the micro-expressions, the posture, and the clear emotional weight in the man's eyes. There was no deception there—only a deep, bone-weary sorrow and a lingering sense of familial guilt.

"You found us all the way out here in Maine?" Arthur asked, his tone softening slightly.
"It wasn't easy," Thomas admitted, pulling a worn leather-bound photo album from beneath his arm. "Marcus gave me a general direction after running background checks to prove my intentions were clean. I just... I wanted to see them. To make sure they were actually loved."
At that moment, the back screen door flew open, and Maya and Leo burst out into the yard, laughing as they chased a stray tennis ball. They froze when they saw the strange man standing on the driveway with Arthur.
Thomas stopped breathing. He stared at Maya, whose facial structure, eyes, and smile were an uncanny, living mirror reflection of his late sister Clara. A thick tear spilled over the edge of Thomas's eyelid.
"Hey kids," Arthur called out gently, waving them over. "Come meet someone special. This is Thomas. Your uncle."
Maya and Leo walked up cautiously, looking up at the tall stranger. Thomas dropped slowly to one knee, his voice trembling as he opened the leather photo album to a faded picture of a young woman smiling in front of a coastal cabin.
"That's your mom," Thomas whispered softly, pointing to the photograph. "And I used to be her big brother. I promised her a long time ago I'd protect our family... and I failed. But looking at you two now, I see she left you in the absolute best hands possible."
May you like
Leo looked up at Arthur, then back at Thomas, before offering a shy, welcoming grin. "Do you want to help us build a fort in the woods?"
Thomas let out a choked laugh, wiping his eyes with the back of his rough hand. "I'd like that more than anything in the world."
