Chapter 21 - The Unannounced GuestSpring arrived in Maine with an explosion of wild lupines blooming across the coastal meadows and salt marshes. The crisp ocean breeze carried the clean scent of pine and saltwater.

One Saturday afternoon, while Arthur was stacking firewood on the side porch, a dusty vintage pickup truck rumbled slowly up their long gravel driveway and came to a quiet stop.
Arthur paused, resting his hands on a heavy log, his instincts instinctively sharpening. A tall, weathered man with silver-streaked hair and kind eyes stepped out of the driver's side, wearing a faded flannel shirt and work boots. He looked around the property, taking in the thriving flower boxes and the tire swing hanging from the oak tree.
"Can I help you?" Arthur asked calmly, stepping down off the porch.
The man offered a gentle, slightly nervous smile, holding up his hands to show he meant no harm. "Easy, friend. I'm not here looking for trouble. My name is Thomas Vance. Clara's older brother... and Maya and Leo's uncle on their mother's side."

Arthur’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Clara never mentioned an older brother. She said Julian was her only sibling."
"Julian was the golden boy who drank the Sterling Kool-Aid and sold his soul to Richard," Thomas sighed, walking closer with a quiet, genuine humility. "I broke away from that toxic family twenty years ago, changed my last name legally for a long time, and lived off the grid out west. It wasn't until the federal raids hit the news last year that I found out what happened to Clara... and that her children survived."
