Chapter 1 - The Shadow Behind the GlassThe hospital room went dead silent. Detective Miller held up the crinkled photograph he’d found hidden beneath my mother’s mattress.

The man in the photo had harsh grey eyes and a deep scar slicing down his left cheek. I knew that face. For months, I had seen him sitting in a black SUV parked at the edge of the woods across our gravel driveway. Every time I asked Mom who he was, her voice would tremble as she locked the deadbolts: “Nobody, Leo. Just keep your head down.”

“His name is Victor Vance,” Detective Miller said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “He’s not just a stranger, Leo. He’s a former federal fugitive... and six years ago, he was charged with high-level extortion and kidnapping.”

My throat locked up. “Is he... my father?”

Before Miller could answer, the red emergency lights in the hospital hallway began to flash wildly. A shrill alarm shattered the silence.

“CODE RED: SECURITY BREACH IN NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE.”

Miller snatched his sidearm from his holster, turning toward the doorway. “Stay under the blanket, Leo. Do not move!”

He rushed out, locking the heavy wooden door behind him. I pulled the thin hospital sheet up to my chin, my heart hammering against my ribs. Through the frosted glass panel of the door, I watched the shadows of running nurses and security officers.

Then, the main corridor lights cut out completely, plunging the hospital into pitch-black darkness.

And right outside my door, I heard it.

Squeak. Squeak. Squeak.

The sound of rubber wheels on linoleum flooring. The exact same sound my rusty wheelbarrow had made when I pushed my brother and sister into the lobby.

HOOK: Someone had just walked past my door... and they were pushing a wheelbarrow into the pitch-black hallway.
