Chapter 7 - The Snake in the BadgeVictor smashed the truck radio with his fist, but it was too late.

Up ahead, where the dirt trail met the main highway, two heavy tactical vehicles were already parked sideways, blocking the exit. Headlights blinded us through the windshield.
âHold on!â Victor yelled, stomping on the accelerator.
The pickup truck crashed right through the wooden guardrail on the side of the trail, plunging down a steep embankment into a roaring, shallow river!
Water splashed over the hood. The engine sputtered and died.
âOut! Out!â Victor shouted, unbuckling my seatbelt and grabbing the babies.
We waded through the icy knee-deep water toward a rocky cave on the far side of the riverbank. Tactical flashlights swept across the trees high above us. Men in black uniforms were descending the slope, weapons drawn.
Leading them down the hill was Detective Miller, his arm no longer slung, carrying a silenced assault rifle.
âGive it up, Vance!â Miller shouted across the roaring water. âYouâre surrounded! Hand over the kids, and maybe Iâll let you live long enough to stand trial!â
Victor pulled a small remote detonator from his belt.
âYou shouldnât have tracked my truck, Miller,â Victor muttered.
He pressed the red button.
BOOM!
The abandoned pickup truck exploded into a massive fireball in the middle of the river, creating a wall of smoke and fire that blocked the mercenaries' line of sight!

âRun!â Victor commanded, pulling me into the darkness of the cave system.
HOOK: The cave didn't lead to a dead endâit led straight into the underground bunker where my mother had hidden her final, ultimate weapon.
