Chapter 6 - The Stolen BloodlineWe ran through the freezing forest for nearly an hour, Victor carrying the heavy twin carrier effortlessly while guiding me through the thick brush.

Finally, we reached a hidden clearing where an old pickup truck was concealed under a camouflage tarp. Victor placed the twins safely in the back cab and hoisted me into the passenger seat before hopping behind the wheel.

As the truck roared to life and sped down a hidden dirt trail, I pulled my mother’s letter out of my pocket.

“Dad?” I asked quietly, using the word for the first time.

“Yeah, son?”

“In the letter... Mom wrote that if he learns the twins survived, he will come for them. Who is he?”

Victor kept his eyes glued to the dark road ahead, his grip tightening on the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white.

“Seven years ago, when your mother was working as a top genetic researcher for the State, she discovered that a private medical corporation called Aegis Bio was conducting illegal human testing on newborn infants,” Victor said, his tone dark. “The man behind Aegis Bio is a billionaire named Richard Sterling. He uses corrupt law enforcement, judges, and doctors to acquire infants from vulnerable families.”

I swallowed hard. “And Maya and Jonah...?”

“Your mother found out Sterling’s network was tracking her pregnancy,” Victor said, looking at me through the rearview mirror. “She realized they wanted the twins because of a rare genetic resistance your mother developed during her research. If Sterling gets his hands on Maya and Jonah, they will spend the rest of their lives inside a laboratory.”

Suddenly, the truck’s radio crackled with static, and a smooth, chilling voice filled the cab.

“Hello, Victor,” the voice said over the emergency broadcast channel. “I see you’ve collected the children. How touching.”

Frank’s cardiac procedure had frightened everyone, and Diane had begun saying they were tired of winters inland, tired of stairs, tired of being so far from the ocean. I could afford the house. That mattered. I was a commercial novelist, and after fifteen years of inconsistent beginnings, my backlist had finally become predictable enough to create the strange kind of financial stability writers rarely admitted existed. Royalties came from older books, foreign editions, television options that mostly went nowhere, audiobook licensing, and one series that kept selling long after I expected readers to forget it. The down payment came from an investment account I opened before I met Evan, combined with proceeds from intellectual property I had created before our marriage. The deed was in my name.
