Chapter 5 - The Autopsy RevelationI stared at the photograph, my hands trembling violently. “If you’re my father... why did Mom teach me to say I didn’t have one? Why did she tell me to run from you?”

Victor wiped the rain from his scarred face, his expression filled with immense pain.

“Because seven years ago, I was framed for a murder I didn’t commit by the corrupt syndicate running this county,” Victor explained quickly, watching the road behind us. “Your mother had to pretend to hate me and go into hiding to keep you safe. But three weeks ago, she discovered who was poisoned her. She contacted me. She told me to watch the house from across the road because she knew her time was running out.”

Before I could digest his words, sirens wailed in the distance. Blue and red lights reflected off the wet trees.

“Listen to me, Leo,” Victor said, grabbing my small hands. “The police officer who brought you here—Detective Miller—who do you think gave him the key to Cabin 14?”

I froze. “You left it... in the hospital room...”

“I never set foot in that hospital room!” Victor said urgently. “I was outside fighting off two hitmen near the parking garage! The man who dropped that key and shot at Miller... was Miller’s own partner!”

My heart sank into my stomach.

Victor grabbed the baby carrier with one arm and pulled me close with the other. “We have to go NOW. The police who are coming aren’t here to rescue you. They’re here to make sure none of Sarah’s children ever talk!”
