Chapter 2 - The Silence in Room 304I stopped breathing.

I slid out of the high hospital bed, my bare feet touching the ice-cold floor. I remembered Momâs voice in my head: âIf youâre scared, Leo, count to ten and find a small place to hide.â
I crawled under the bed, pressing my back against the wall. Through the gap under the door, I saw a pair of heavy, mud-caked leather boots stop directly outside Room 304âthe room where my twin siblings, Maya and Jonah, were hooked up to warming incubators.
A metallic click echoed through the silent hallway. The lock was being picked.
The door crept open. I could hear the faint, slow breathing of the intruder standing over the babies' cribs.
âWhere are you, little ones?â a rough, raspy voice whispered in the dark. âYour mother thought she could keep you hidden forever.â
My hands shook violently, but I bit my lip until I tasted copper to keep from crying out. I couldn't lose Maya and Jonah. They were all I had left.
Suddenly, a flashlight beam cut through the room from the doorway.
âFreeze! Hands where I can see them!â Detective Miller screamed.
BANG!
A gunshot echoed down the narrow corridor. Glass shattered. I covered my ears and screamed as heavy footsteps sprinted past my hiding spot, followed by the sound of sirens blaring outside.
When the backup lights finally kicked on, Detective Miller was leaning against my doorframe, clutching his bleeding shoulder.
âHe got away,â Miller gasped, sinking to his knees. âBut he left something behind.â

On the floor in front of the twinsâ incubators lay a single black leather glove. Inside it was a small brass key labeled: CABIN 14 - BLACKWOOD RIDGE.
HOOK: The intruder wasn't trying to steal the babies. He was leaving a key to a place my mother had never mentionedâa place where she had buried her deepest secret.
