Chapter 9 - The Showdown at Blackwood RidgeVictor looked at the screen: UPLOAD PROGRESS: 18%... 19%...

He looked at me, then at the sleeping twins. A look of fierce determination crossed his face.

“Leo,” Victor whispered, handing me a small silver drive. “When this computer reaches 100%, it will automatically broadcast the files to every federal agency in the country. If anyone tries to stop it, press this red manual override button.”

“Dad, what are you going to do?” I cried, tears streaming down my face.

“I’m going to buy you time,” Victor said softly. He kissed my forehead, then kissed Maya and Jonah. “I spent seven years away from you, Leo. I won’t let them take one more second of your future.”

Victor grabbed two handguns, kicked open the cellar trapdoor, and charged up the wooden steps into a hail of gunfire!

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Shouts and glass shattering filled the air above. I threw my body over the computer desk, monitoring the upload bar with terrified eyes.

Suddenly, the cellar door was kicked completely off its hinges!

Detective Miller tumbled down the stairs, covered in blood and bruises, holding his rifle. He caught sight of me and smiled a sickening, twisted smile.

“End of the line, kid,” Miller growled, aiming the rifle straight at my chest. “Your daddy’s pinned down upstairs. It’s over.”

My heart stopped. I looked at the computer screen: 91%... 94%...

Miller pulled the trigger!

CLICK.

His gun jammed.

In that split second of confusion, I didn't run. I remembered what my mother had spent seven years teaching me—about strength, about protecting my family, about never giving up.

I grabbed a heavy steel fire extinguisher off the wall and swung it with all the force my seven-year-old body possessed, slamming it directly into Miller’s knee!

Miller screamed in agony, collapsing to the floor. I dove across the desk and slammed my palm onto the glowing red override button!
