Chapter 8 - The Cabin of SecretsThe underground tunnel led us half a mile through total darkness until we emerged inside a hidden cellar beneath an old, abandoned cabin—Cabin 14 at Blackwood Ridge.

The cellar was filled with computer monitors, server racks, and stacks of hard drives. This was my mother’s secret laboratory.

Victor placed the twins on a soft cot in the corner and immediately ran to the main computer terminal. He inserted the brass key into a slot on the desk. The screens flickered to life, illuminating the dark room with blue light.

“What is all this?” I asked, awestruck.

“This is your mother’s legacy, Leo,” Victor said, frantically typing commands into the keyboard. “Before she died, Sarah gathered every piece of evidence against Richard Sterling, Detective Miller, and their entire trafficking ring. But she encrypted the decryption key inside a unique biometric code.”

“Biometric code?” I repeated.

Victor turned to me, his eyes filled with profound emotion. “Sarah knew that if she was killed, Sterling’s men would search the house for hard drives. So she programmed the decryption key to respond to only three physical inputs in the world.”

He reached out and gently touched my hand.

“Your fingerprint, Leo. And the footprints of Maya and Jonah.”

My mother hadn't just saved us by telling me to run—she had made us the only key capable of destroying the darkest evil in the state.

Suddenly, a loud thud echoed from the cabin floorboards above our heads.

Floorboards creaked. Heavy steps were walking directly over the cellar door.

“I know you’re down there, Victor,” Richard Sterling’s cold voice rang out through a loudspeaker from above. “You have five seconds to send the kids up, or I drop a thermite grenade through the floor.”

HOOK: We were trapped. The upload was only at 12%, and Sterling was about to burn the cabin to the ground!
