Chapter 10 - The Shocking Aftermath & The Ultimate TwistRichard Sterling walked down the cellar stairs slowly, dressed in an immaculate grey suit, stepping right over the groaning Detective Miller. He held a small black revolver.

Above us, the gunfire had stopped. Federal tactical teams—alerted by the sudden automatic broadcast—were rappelling down from helicopters onto the cabin roof.

“You’re a clever boy, Leo,” Sterling said calmly, aiming the gun at me. “Your mother was clever too. But you made one fatal mistake.”

I backed against the computer console, standing firmly in front of my baby brother and sister. “The files are already gone! The FBI has everything!”

Sterling chuckled, a dark, terrifying sound. “Oh, I know the files were sent. But do you really think I came here for the files?”

He lowered his gun slightly and pulled a small glass vial filled with blue liquid from his pocket—the exact same liquid that had killed my mother.

“I didn’t want to kill Sarah,” Sterling revealed softly. “She was my top scientist. But she betrayed me when she stole my greatest creation.”

I frowned, confused. “What creation?”

Sterling pointed at the twin carrier where Maya and Jonah lay.

“Those babies aren’t Victor’s children, Leo,” Sterling whispered, his eyes widening with unhinged insanity. “And they aren’t Sarah’s either. They are cloned genetic prototypes created in my private facility. Sarah stole them seven days after they were synthesized!”

My mind shattered into a thousand pieces. My breath hitched in my throat.

“Which means,” Sterling smiled evilly, raising the gun again, “you, Leo... are the only real child Sarah ever had. And once I eliminate you, the company reclaims its property.”

“DROP YOUR WEAPON!”

BOOM!

The cellar wall collapsed outward as a heavy swat vehicle smashed through the stone foundation! Federal agents flooded the room, tackling Sterling to the ground before he could pull the trigger!

Victor sprinted through the dust and rubble, bleeding from multiple wounds, and threw his arms around me, pulling me into a desperate, sobbing embrace.

“I’ve got you, Leo,” Victor sobbed, holding me tight. “I’ve got you. It’s over.”

THREE YEARS LATERThe sun was shining brightly over the green hills of a quiet farm in Montana.

I was ten years old now.

I stood on the porch of our new home, watching my three-year-old twin brother and sister, Maya and Jonah, laughing and chasing butterflies through the tall grass.

Behind me, the screen door opened. Victor walked out, holding two mugs of hot chocolate, handing one to me.

Richard Sterling and Detective Miller were serving life sentences in a maximum-security federal prison. The trafficking syndicate was completely dismantled, and our story had changed laws across the entire country.

I looked down at the rusty wheelbarrow sitting in the corner of our garden—the same wheelbarrow I had pushed for miles on that terrible night three years ago. Victor had cleaned it, painted it gold, and planted beautiful white flowers inside it in memory of my mother.

It didn't matter if Maya and Jonah were created in a lab or born in a hospital. It didn't matter what secrets had been hidden in our past.

They were my brother and sister.

And as I took a sip of my hot chocolate, watching my father smile as he chased the twins across the yard, I knew one thing for certain:
