Chapter 3 - The Cryptic NotebookBy dawn, the hospital was under total police lockdown. State Troopers guarded the ICU, and federal agents were interviewing everyone who entered the building.

Detective Miller sat in a chair beside me, his shoulder wrapped in heavy white bandages. On the tray table between us was my mother’s letter, along with a small, leather-bound notebook that officers had uncovered during a deeper search of our tiny house.

“Leo,” Miller said gently. “We ran your mother’s fingerprints from the house. Her real name wasn’t Elena Ross.”

I stared at him, confused. “What do you mean? That’s her name! She signed all my school papers!”

“Her real name was Dr. Sarah Vance,” Miller revealed. “She was a lead forensic scientist for the state department... and Victor Vance was her brother.”

My mind spun. The man who was watching us... was my uncle?

“Your mother didn’t die of natural causes, Leo,” Miller continued, his eyes grim. “The preliminary toxicology report came back two hours ago. Someone put an odorless, slow-acting nerve agent into her tea over the course of three weeks. She knew she was dying. That’s why she trained you to bring the babies here.”

He opened the leather notebook to the final page. It was covered in numbers, dates, and names—names of powerful judges, police chiefs, and local politicians.

And right at the bottom, written in my mother’s shaky handwriting, was one final line:

“Victor isn’t coming to kill the children. He’s coming to erase the evidence inside them.”

HOOK: My mother hadn't just given birth to twins. She had used a secret medical procedure to hide classified digital data inside her own infants' micro-implants—and the entire town's leadership wanted them dead.
