Chapter 11 - THE SHADOWS OF THE PENITENTIARY

The heavy iron gates of the federal penitentiary closed with a metallic clang that vibrated straight through Roman Vale’s chest. The institutional green walls were stark, smelling of bleach, damp concrete, and unspokencollective despair. He sat on the edge of a thin, bolted-down metal bunk, staring at his hands. These were the hands that had once signed multi-million dollar corporate acquisitions, toasted champagne with elite art dealers, and casually swiped away emergency medical notifications on a glowing screen.
Now, they were bare. His custom Swiss watch had been confiscated during intake, replaced by a cheap plastic barcode band bearing inmate number 488-902.
Across the gray-painted hallway, a guard banged a heavy baton against the bars. "Lights out in ten, Vale! Stop staring at the wall and get on your rack!"
Roman didn’t move. His mind was trapped in an endless, looping nightmare. He kept replaying the exact moment he stood in Room 402, looking at the stripped mattress, the empty bassinet, and Mara's wedding ring resting beside those five damning words: You received every call.

He had lost everything. His wealth, his freedom, his social standing, and his son—all sacrificed on the altar of his own arrogant narcissism. But what terrified him even more than the fifteen-year sentence was the chilling realization of how completely Mara had outmaneuvered him. She hadn't just reacted to his betrayal; she had anticipated it. She had built the trap, laid the bait, and watched him walk straight into it with his eyes wide open.
As the master light switch clicked off, plunging the cell block into a dim, amber-tinted gloom, Roman pulled his knees to his chest. In the dark silence, a cold whisper echoed in his mind: She is just getting started.
