Chapter 24 - THE ROOTS OF THE VALE FAMILYFar away from the damp concrete of the penitentiary, the sun was setting over the picturesque countryside outside the city, painting the sky in shades of amber and violet. Mara Vale stood on the expansive stone veranda of her private family estate, watching her six-year-old son, Julian Jr., chase a golden retriever across the manicured lawn.

Arthur Vance walked out onto the veranda, holding a fresh cup of coffee and a thick manila envelope bearing an unlabelled postal stamp.

"Another fan mail letter?" Mara asked without turning around, resting her hands on the stone railing.

"Worse," Arthur said grimly, stepping up beside her. "Or perhaps, more complicated. This wasn't delivered through regular mail. It was dropped off at our downtown security desk by a courier who paid cash and vanished before he could be questioned."

Mara turned, taking the envelope from Arthur’s hands. She pulled out the contents: a single, faded photograph taken twenty-five years ago, showing an older man with silver hair standing outside a federal courthouse, alongside a birth certificate and a confidential financial ledger.

Her breath hitched. For the first time in five years, the absolute, unshakeable composure in Mara’s eyes fractured into a flicker of cold, defensive shock.

"Where did this come from?" Mara whispered, her voice dropping to a dangerous chill.

"We traced the handwriting on the courier receipt," Arthur replied carefully. "It matches a memo sent from inside the federal penitentiary. It came from an associate of Roman’s—a man named Viktor Kane. They’re digging into your father’s past, Mara. Specifically, his involvement with the Department of Justice’s 2001 asset seizure scandal."

Mara stared down at the photograph. The ghost she had spent a decade burying—the painful history of her family name before she changed it, the sacrifice her father had made to protect federal whistleblowers—was suddenly being dredged up by a desperate man locked behind iron bars.

"Roman thinks he can use my father’s legacy as leverage against my foundation," Mara said, her voice hardening into pure steel as she slid the documents back into the envelope. "He thinks exposing the past will destroy everything I've built."

"If those documents get leaked to the investigative press without proper context, it could trigger a massive public relations crisis for the foundation," Arthur warned. "What do your instincts tell you to do?"

Mara looked back out at the lawn, watching her son laugh as he tumbled onto the grass with the dog. A fierce, protective fire ignited deep within her chest.

"Roman wants to play dirty in the dark?" Mara said quietly, her eyes narrowing. "Let's bring the entire history out into the sunlight where everyone can see it—on our terms."
