Chapter 27 - THE HOSPITAL WING RECOVERYTwo days later, Roman woke up under the sterile, humming fluorescent lights of the prison’s medical wing. His face was wrapped in gauze, his ribs throbbed with every shallow breath, and his left eye was swollen completely shut.

The prison doctor, a tired middle-aged man with a clipboard, stood over his cot checking his charts.

"You're lucky none of your ribs punctured your lungs, Vale," the doctor muttered dryly. "The guards pulled them off you just in time. The warden has placed you in protective custody isolation for the remainder of your sentence. No yard time, no common area access, complete solitude."

Roman stared blankly up at the white ceiling. Total solitude. No yard, no inmates, no whispers, no schemes. Just him, the four concrete walls, and the inescapable weight of his own choices.

As the doctor walked away, a nurse left a small plastic cup of water and a local daily newspaper on the bedside tray. Roman turned his head slowly, wincing in pain, and looked at the front page of the newspaper.

The headline across the financial section read: VALE-HARRISON FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES $100 MILLION GLOBAL INITIATIVE FOR MATERNAL HEALTH AND CORPORATE TRANSPARENCY.

Beneath the bold headline was a crisp, full-color photograph of Mara Vale, standing beside international dignitaries, holding a ceremonial ribbon-cutting golden scissors. She looked radiant, powerful, untouchable, and completely at peace.

Roman closed his single open eye as a hot, bitter tear slipped down his bruised cheek. He had traded everything—his family, his integrity, his future—for a temporary illusion of control with a woman who had abandoned him the moment things fell apart. And now, while he rotted in a prison medical cot, Mara was building a legacy that would echo across generations.
