Chapter 3 - THE DAWN AWAKENINGRoman Vale stepped out of his sleek black sedan at 5:30 a.m., holding two dozen expensive white roses. The scent of sweet florals clashed sharply with the clinical antiseptic smell of the maternity wing. He walked with the swagger of a man who owned the city, fully expecting to find Mara weeping in a dim hospital room, exhausted, terrified, and endlessly apologetic for interrupting his evening.

He pushed open the door to Room 402—and stopped dead in his tracks.

The roses slipped from his grip, scattering white petals across the freshly polished linoleum. The bed was completely stripped down to the bare mattress. The bassinet was gone. The whiteboard on the wall, which should have read Baby Boy Vale, was wiped pristine and empty.

Roman’s heart hammered against his ribs. He rushed to the bedside table. There was no flowers, no baby, no wife. Only two things remained:

Mara’s heavy platinum-and-diamond wedding ring, gleaming coldly under the fluorescent light.
