Chapter 18 - THE MASTER STROKEMara looked at the documents, then up at Julian Cross. A slow, knowing smile touched the corners of her lips—not a smile of warmth, but the smile of an apex predator closing the final circle around its prey.

"You assume Roman didn't already try to contact you from prison, Julian," Mara said softly.
Julian’s face drained of color. "What are you talking about?"
Mara reached over and pressed a button on her desk intercom. "Arthur, please bring in Special Agent Vance."
The heavy glass door swung open immediately. It wasn't Arthur who stepped into the room, but senior Federal Special Agent Marcus Vance, accompanied by two armed federal marshals. Their badges gleamed under the conference room lights.
Julian scrambled backward, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. "Wait! This is a trap! I brought you the files!"
"You brought us the exact bait we needed to track the final ping on Roman’s encrypted communication channel," Agent Vance said smoothly, snapping steel handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists. "Your Swiss bank accounts were frozen three hours ago, Julian. Collaboration with a convicted felon under federal investigation carries an extra five years. Shall we discuss terms in an interrogation room?"

As Julian was dragged out of the room protesting frantically, Mara closed the manila folder. She pulled out her secure smartphone, opened an encrypted terminal, and typed a single message directly to the federal prison warden’s secure desk terminal regarding Inmate 488-902:
