Chapter 2 - SEVEN UNANSWERED ECHOESInside St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, the sterile white lights felt blinding. Dr. Harrison’s face was grave as the fetal monitor emitted a slow, rhythmic, terrifying drop in the baby’s heart rate. "Mrs. Vale, we need to prep for an emergency C-section immediately," Dr. Harrison said, his voice urgent as nurses rushed around the gurney. "Where is your husband?"

Mara’s phone sat on the bedside table. The screen lit up for the seventh time. Missing Call: Roman Vale (Private Emergency Line). The hospital’s obstetric triage had already sent the final, critical warning at 11:14 p.m.: Fetal distress. Emergency delivery may be required. Contact obstetric triage immediately.
Mara watched the status change from Delivered to Read. Roman had seen it. He had looked at the words warning him that his child might not survive, and he had chosen to turn his phone face down to finish his dessert with Celeste.
A cold, absolute clarity washed over Mara. The fear vanished, replaced by a terrifying, razor-sharp resolve. She looked past the nurse holding the consent form and straight into Dr. Harrison's eyes. "He’s not coming," Mara said, her voice steady and chillingly calm. "Proceed with the surgery. And hand me my legal portfolio."
