Chapter 9 - A MOTHER’S SANCTUARYFar away from the flashing police lights and the collapsing glass towers of the financial district, room 812 of a quiet, private recovery clinic smelled faintly of lavender and warm milk.

Mara Vale sat propped up in a plush hospital bed, her face soft and radiant in the afternoon sunlight streaming through the window. In her arms lay a tiny, perfect baby boy with a full head of dark hair, sleeping peacefully against her chest. Dr. Harrison walked in quietly, holding a discharge chart and smiling warmly. "He’s completely healthy, Mrs. Vale. Vitals are pristine. You both made it through a remarkably high-risk night." "Thank you, Doctor," Mara whispered, kissing the top of her son’s newborn head. "And the legal seal?" "Handled precisely as your counsel instructed," Dr. Harrison replied softly, handing her a secure tablet. "The temporary restraining order is fully active. No unauthorized individuals can approach this wing. Your husband... well, let's just say his morning has been significantly busier than ours."
Mara looked down at the tablet screen. A live news broadcast showed federal agents leading a handcuffed man in a tailored charcoal suit out of the Vale Tower, his head bowed low beneath a heavy winter coat to shield his face from the cameras. She watched for a single second, felt a profound, weightless wave of absolute freedom wash over her soul, and then gently tapped the screen to turn it off forever.
