Chapter 2 - The Deleted FilesVanessa didn't leave quietly.

Thirty-four minutes later, the roar of her sports car engine tore through the quiet night, kicking up gravel against the estate gates. The mansion fell into an eerie, heavy silence.

Roberto stood in his private study on the second floor, his hands gripping the edge of his mahogany desk so hard his knuckles turned white. Sofía was finally asleep, tucked safely into her bed with María humming a soft, ancient lullaby right beside her.

Roberto pulled out his encrypted phone and dialed Marcus, his head of corporate security and private intelligence.

"Boss?" Marcus answered immediately, sensing the razor-sharp edge in Roberto's voice. "It’s past nine. Something wrong?"

"Everything," Roberto snapped. "I want a full background check on Vanessa. Everything. Financial records, past relationships, social circle, family history. Dig until you find the rot."

There was a brief pause on the line. "Sir... Vanessa came recommended by the Sterling Foundation. Her background check when you married her was immaculate."

"People lie, Marcus. And papers can be forged," Roberto said, his eyes narrowing as he looked at a framed photograph of Vanessa smiling next to him at a gala. He felt sick to his stomach. "Dig deeper than standard procedure. Look at her debts, her previous associations, anyone she’s been in contact with over the last five years. I want to know why a woman with expensive tastes suddenly targeted a grieving widower with a blind child."

"Consider it done," Marcus replied, his tone shifting into professional gear. "I'll have a preliminary report by dawn."

Roberto hung up and leaned back in his leather chair, rubbing his temples. A dull, throbbing headache pounded behind his eyes. He had prided himself on being untouchable. In the ruthless world of corporate acquisitions and high-stakes finance, he always read the fine print. He smelled a trap a mile away.

So how had he missed this one?

As if answering his thoughts, his desktop computer chimed, alerting him to an incoming automated backup alert from the estate's central server. Roberto frowned. The main security system automatically backed up every camera angle, audio feed, and sensor log to a secure local network drive at midnight. But tonight, a red warning flag blinked on his screen: File corruption detected in Living Room Sector 4.

Roberto leaned forward, typing in his master override password.

Sector 4 was the exact location where Vanessa had raised her hand against Sofía.

He clicked on the archive folder for the past week, expecting to see the video logs ready for export. Instead, the folder was completely blank.

Error: Data stream overwritten or deleted remotely.

Roberto’s blood ran cold. The security system couldn't just wipe its own logs. It required root access. It required the master admin password—a password known only to two people in the entire world: Roberto himself... and Vanessa.

She hadn't just been a cruel stepmother. She had been preparing for this exact moment. She had administrative access to his home network, and she had systematically purged the evidence of her abuse before storming out.

Or perhaps, she hadn't just deleted the files. Perhaps she had copied them somewhere else.

Roberto’s fingers flew across the keyboard. He pulled up the server access logs, tracking every IP address that had connected to the mansion's mainframe over the past forty-eight hours.

Most entries were routine: his own laptop, the smart fridge, the automated lighting system. But at 4:15 PM that afternoon—just hours before he came home early—an external connection had been established from an unknown device.

The data transfer rate spiked significantly. Over four gigabytes of encrypted video files had been downloaded to an external cloud server hosted offshore.

Roberto stared at the screen, a chilling realization dawning on him.

Vanessa hadn't just been living a double life. She had been building leverage against him. And now that she was kicked out of the mansion empty-handed, she had a weapon with his name on it.
