Chapter 7 - The Hidden TruthThe revelation hit Roberto like a physical blow.

He motioned for Arthur to follow him into the private study, gesturing toward the leather armchairs while María hurried to bring fresh tea.

"Explain that," Roberto commanded, sitting across from the old man. "What does Julian have to do with Elena’s family?"

Arthur took a shaky breath, resting his hands on his cane. "Years ago, before you and Elena ever met, Julian Thorne tried to merge his father’s real estate firm with the Sterling estate holdings. I rejected him. He was dangerous, unprincipled, and obsessed with dominating the market. To retaliate, Julian spent years trying to ruin me. When Elena married you, he saw another opportunity."

"An opportunity for what?" Roberto asked, leaning forward.

"Control," Arthur said. "Julian knew that my entire fortune was set up in a blind trust tied directly to my direct descendants—to Elena, and subsequently, to her child. If Elena and her child were entirely isolated from me, and if someone under Julian’s influence eventually took control of your household... my entire legacy would fall directly into his hands."

Roberto stared at him, the horrifying scale of Julian’s long-term conspiracy coming into full focus. Julian hadn't just been a corporate rival competing for the downtown waterfront project; he had been orchestrating a decades-long vendetta designed to bleed the Sterling family dry and usurp Roberto's empire from the inside out.

And Vanessa Moreau had been the final, poisoned piece of that puzzle.

"She was his plant from the very beginning," Roberto murmured, the pieces clicking together with terrifying precision. "He placed her in my life two years ago to isolate Sofía, drive me away, manipulate the household, and eventually execute a quiet takeover of my estate when I was weak."

"And she almost succeeded," Arthur said softly, looking toward the ceiling where Sofía was sleeping upstairs. "Except you came home five minutes early."

Silence descended upon the study. For the first time in his life, Roberto felt a profound sense of humility. All his wealth, all his security systems, all his corporate dominance—none of it had protected his family. It was only human instinct, raw courage, and a five-minute shift in schedule that had saved them.

"Where is she now?" Arthur asked quietly. "Vanessa."

"Federal custody," Roberto replied coldly. "Along with Julian. Their empire of lies is burning to the ground as we speak."

Before Arthur could reply, a soft, tentative knock sounded at the study door.

The door slowly pushed open. Sofía stood in the doorway, rubbing her sleepy eyes, clutching her stuffed rabbit in one hand. She wore her favorite yellow pajamas, her small face bathed in the soft morning light.

"Daddy?" Sofía’s sweet, hesitant voice filled the room. "Is someone here? I heard talking."
